Waking Up by GiftedLion Waking Up by GiftedLion
I hadn't drawn my favorite feline dancer in quite some time so I thought I'd take a break form... whatever it was I was doing at the time and draw Felicia.

This piece may have been the biggest hassle I have ever dealt with. After completing it once, my program GIMP crashed during the final save and ended up writing over my backup of it and corrupting the original save file. Eight hours of work, poof! Gone. Then after cursing the high heavens for such misplaced misfortune I downed six Mt. Dews and a box of peanut butter cookies and in five hours I created this. Of course, nowhere near as awesome as the other and I spy many flaws and things I wish to change but I've actually grown sick of staring at the computer screen so this will have to do.

Please enjoy, I sure as hell will.

Okay, you wanted to know why I put this in the "Needs Improvement" favorite folder?
Pros/praise:
1. Her flesh tone is the right color for once. I'm actually pretty sick of milky-skin Felicia. That is something that came around due to fan art, not by her original design. Kudos.
2. Her hand-paws are a lovely size. They are just big enough to still remain awkward yet cute, without looking ridiculous. It just seems to fit. Kudos again for trying something experimental while not deviating too far from the original concept.
3. The perspective of the background is pretty good. I like the 3/4 tall-man-view.
4. Dem eyes, dat big hair, dat anime mouth, dem shoulders, dem hips--NOM!
5. The shading you did for her white fur is great. It's a very good gradient choice that you went with, and I think that should be applauded.
6. You have a decent concept of how lighting works, and have put it in places where it would show up in this scene.
7. Your style is a semi-simplistic anime/manga vogue that I am used to seeing in doujins and other places and it gives me warm fuzzies just for that.
8. It's just plain frickken' cute. ^^

Cons/gripes:
1. The piece really seems like something you could do over again with another hour or two. Maybe use Sai, or go back to gimp and work on it a bit more? Experiment some more, please? Because you have such a nice style, and the whole piece with it's current lines doesn't seem well structured.
2. Not enough details. I feel like your style could use a lot of tutorial lessons from us here on DeviantArt on how to do shading according to body anatomy and how fabric folds work. Try using straight lines with your colors at first to tell your brain where you know the sharpest points of the light are going to go and then fade them out to look more natural...do not trust the circle brushes' lies...for they be eeeevil.
3. The perspective of her eyebrows seems off. You've got the right expression, but they don't seem to fit on the face in a believable way.
4. The same mistake most good artists make concerning Felicia...the ears. You've drawn it as if the headband, and her ears are one and the same part. They are not. I believe you know that. Those ears really are her ears. The headband is just something she wears. And it looks like one of her ears is bigger than the other...make the small ear as big as the seemingly bigger one. That should even it out.
5. Anatomy issues, such as the foot that's on the floor. Exactly how is it supposed to be positioned? Up on the ball of her foot? Heel down on the ground....is her left foot bigger than her right foot and nobody told me? At this angle, that extra line you have to represent her groin is really unnecessary, and her breasts rest way to high on her chest. Also, the tricep of her upraised arm seems warped. Put more weight to it near the underside of her shoulder.
6. You should have had more fun with her hair. With your artstyle you really could have made it pop, giving it dimensions and different linear shades of blue from top to bottom...Heck, for the scene you could have made her hair all tussled to really accent the scene.
7. Fur lines don't match up with anatomy that well...except on the boobs and hips.  Ya got that right.

Hints and Tricks:
1. Anatomy  and fabric references and tutorials...collect them like pokemon and experiment with ALL and ANY of them. DeviantArt is a good hunting ground for them.
2. Practice like it's an obsession.
3. Do not stop drawing Felicia.
